Kindergarten/Preschool programs

The first years in the life of a child are crucial for further development. Therefore we campaign for children in Sri Lanka, mainly children of socially disadvantaged groups, the chance of a qualified pre-school education so that they have a good foundation towards their further education. So far pre-school education in Sri Lanka does not have a sufficient standard. But by intense lobby work of the aid organizations in Sri Lanka meanwhile curricula and regulations for preschools appropriate for children have been implemented.

In addition to their official training as a teacher the teachers in our FRIENDS- facilities get an internationally accepted training in the methods of Maria Montessori. Therefore FRIENDS Kinderhilfe International e.V. with our ‚Frangipani preschools’  is a pioneer in the field of preschool education in several regions of Sri Lanka forming a constant in this field with many compliments of the Sri Lanka Ministry of Education.

Additional training for socially disadvantaged children

In Sri Lanka there is „free education“ for theoretically all children. Unfortunately reality is different. The salaries of teachers at state schools are so low that most of them have to work in the afternoon as private teachers.

This leads to a quasi parallel school system, the „Tuition Class System“  which we can hardly  dispense with. The teachers are not at all doing their best to impart knowledge to the children at state schools because they give private lessons in the afternoon. Those children who cannot afford additional private lessons, have therefore no chance to graduate from school.

In our training centres children of poor families get lessons in various subjects aimed at graduation. Alternatively children and teenagers without graduation get technical training to enable them to earn their living.

Training programs in children’s homes

Also in the children’s homes being supported by us we concentrate on the training of the children to increase their chance for graduation. These training programs are being financed by the long-term support of our sponsorships for children. Moreover we attach great importance to individual support in order to offer each child the training tailored to his/her talent and discuss the future of each child with his/her sponsor.
