Friends Educational Support

Education is one of the most important pre-conditions for a healthy community and clears the way for „help to self-help“. All our educational programs in Sri Lanka concentrate next to better education also on the strengthening of the children’s position of children in the community. We speak for children and teenagers by informing them about their rights and such making them strong to defend themselves against violation, abuse and disregard. Furthermore it is necessary to convince adults to acknowledge the rights of their children and to thereby support the development of their children.

Although the free of charge system of education in Sri Lanka considers compulsory education, for many children it is not granted that they graduate from school. Many school-age children leave school early to contribute to the support of their family. Children without official papers fail the educational net in any case. Our numerous supportive group measures and educational programs meet therefore high approval by children of poorest families in the region depending on free education.

The main focus of FRIENDS Kinderhilfe International e.V.: In partly isolated and poor regions a solid net of education and training has been developed. We assist children by means of additional lessons in various subjects and for example by computer courses, thus enabling them to graduate from school. Individual educational programs increase the chances for professional education and a good future job. This practical education offers teenagers the chance to earn their own money meaning a first step out of poverty.

Furthermore FRIENDS is organizing day care for children to allow single parents to go to work. An all-round education and play program, often together with incorporated kindergarten or preschool activities, complete these facilities.
